Orbit Over Luna – Kyoto/Nara Review

Orbit over Luna is alien to me. No background, no history. But hey, you don’t need to learn histories for music. This band/project hit me 2 days back and all I knew about them was that they fused Post-Rock with Japanese ambience. So I finally heard their new stuff and it is apparently interesting. Kyoto/Nara has five amazing tracks filled with Japanese essence.  First one being, ‘Fushimi Inari’, which refers to a shrine located in Fushimi.  The song starts off very slowly and progresses on with acoustic guitars (which sometimes do sound like eukele) + very exotic percussion. As I listen to the songs and read their titles, curiosity strikes again and again. I want to know more what these titles mean. ‘1000 Torii Gates’ is the second track. And Torii gates are  sacred gates as wikipedia tells me… gates that mark the transition from the profane to the sacred. The song starts with chirping and acoustic guitars. Song has many chord progressions ranging from minors, majors etc and fades out with voices, leaving the Japanese influence on the simple song.

 The first track with an English title is ‘Lost in the midst of all this beauty’. It is a spectacular song. Ambient guitars, keys, the solos and constant psychedelic voices on the back really get you lost in the beauty. ‘Great Buddha & the Sacred Deer’ is  another acoustic song. A nice composition, very simple but still keeps on the momentum the previous tracks have created. The guitars with delay make it even more trippy. ‘Pontochō- The Floating World’ is the fifth and last track. Very organic in nature and the longest one. Its been a journey, I realize now. Orbit over Luna have practically taken me to Japan. You can feel the influence in every track. They’ve taken us from Shrines to Gates to Districts (Ponchoto). All I can say is that, the journey was nice.
